Podcast Episode 103 - Discover the path to becoming your best self

Podcast Episode 103 - Discover the path to becoming your best self

Ever felt lost or hopeless on your road to fulfilling your God-given purpose?

Have you ever asked yourself, “Why do I always make the same mistakes?”

Do you own your mistakes when they happen and fix them?

Today we’re talking about the path to becoming our best selves.

Today is for you:

  • If you’re tired of falling into the same holes.

  • If you desire to grow more.

  • If you’re ready to step into your best self so you can live your best life.

When I was a kid, I was a serious pouter. I didn’t even see it until my mom mentioned it. I was unaware of my issue.

Once I was aware of this blind spot, I would still fall into it, but at least I knew why. But it would take me a long time to fix it.

Then I discovered the root of pouting. I was really afraid to share my voice because I thought conflict meant disconnection, and my voice didn’t matter anyway, so why try to share it?

I still fell into the hole of pouting, but now I see the pattern and know why I do what I do. I got out of the hole quicker.

I can now see the pouting hole before I fall into it and make a different choice.

Next, I’m still working on the root belief “my voice doesn’t matter” to believe, “I have a voice, it’s worth sharing, and I share it.”

There’s a Hole in My Sidewalk by Portia Nelson.

I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I fall in.
I am lost... I am helpless.
It isn’t my fault.
It takes forever to find a way out.

I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend I don’t see it.
I fall in again.
I can’t believe I am in the same place.
But, it isn’t my fault.
It still takes me a long time to get out.

I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see it is there.
I still fall in. It’s a habit.
My eyes are open.
I know where I am.
It is my fault. I get out immediately.

I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.

I walk down another street.

Through this poem, you can see the five stages of awareness that will help us develop our best selves.

No Awareness:

You fall in the hole, but it’s not your fault. You’re a victim who takes forever to get out of the hole.

Low Awareness:

You see the hole but pretend it’s not there. You fall in and struggle to get out because you’re blind spots prevent you from seeing you made your own problems.

Moderate Awareness:

You see the hole but fall in out of habit. You see the patterns so you can get out of the hole quickly.

High Awareness:

You see the hole, make a different choice, and go around the hole.

Very High Awareness:

You take a different path entirely.

How can we use these stages of awareness to grow and become our best selves?

1. Become aware you have a choice

You’re not a victim. Take your power of choice back.

2. Uncover your blind spots

Blindspots prevent us from seeing how we make our own messes.

Just because we don’t see blindspots doesn’t mean others don’t see them. So if you’re unsure what those are, ask a friend for help.

3. Notice the patterns of your thinking, feeling and behaving

We take responsibility for our habits and then make a different choice to get out of the hole.

4. See the choice before you have to make a choice

When we become highly aware, we’ll see the hole and make a different choice to walk around the hole instead of falling in again.

5. Choose to walk a different path

When we’ve worked on ourselves, we get to the point where we just go down a different road entirely, avoiding the hole in the first place.

This takes the highest level of awareness and responsibility to reach this point.

Taking a journey of awareness, discovering our blindspots, taking responsibility and getting to the point we take a different path entirely, we become our best selves. This helps us stay on the path to living our best life, fulfilling our God-given calling.
