Mentors can provide valuable guidance and support as you grow and develop new skills. Andy Andrews calls his mentors his advisory board. And they don’t even have to know they’re on it.

Let’s discuss what questions are good to ask mentors and those you want to learn from.

It’s important to prepare questions that’ll elicit insightful and meaningful responses.

Here are some great questions to ask:

1. How did you get started, and what inspired you to pursue this career or endeavor?

2. What were some challenging situations you faced along the way, and how did you overcome them?

3. What do you consider as your key attributes or strengths in reaching success?

4. What are some valuable lessons you’ve learned throughout your journey?

5. What is one piece of advice you would give to someone who wants to follow in your footsteps? Or what do you wish you’d known when you started your journey?

6. Who are your role models, and what impact have they had on your life’s direction?

7. Can you provide tips on balancing work, family, and personal life?

8. What skill sets are essential for your industry’s success, and how can one acquire them?

9. What are some common mistakes people make when pursuing a similar path, and how can they avoid them?

10. What’s the next big goal you’re working towards, and how are you planning to achieve it?

Bonus: What’s one thing I should be asking you that I didn’t think to ask?

Ask great questions and get great answers. –Andy Andrews
