Do you have a favorite Christmas family tradition?

What gets you excited about the holidays?

Do you wish you had something that brought you closer together?

Today I want to talk to you about building up your family using family traditions.

So, I’m talking to you if:

  • If you need some excitement back in your family.

  • If your family has forgotten how to interact without a device.

  • If you desire to create memories that last a lifetime.

Do you remember the days without smartphones and holidays? As much as I love my phone and it’s soooo convenient, I kinda miss those days.

I remember as a kid drinking Tom & Jerry’s (eggnogISH drink from the 1800s) in the coolest ceramic Santa and Mrs. Clause mugs at my grandmother’s house every Christmas Eve. We loved them so much that I’ve brought those back and use those original mugs from my grandmother! So much fun!

Another thing we did was cut down a real Christmas tree at a Christmas tree farm. You know, like the Griswald’s walking into the forest to cut down the perfect tree and forgetting the saw and the tree being too big for the living room…yea, that.

Family traditions are a great way to get people off their phones and having fun again–together.

Here are three ways family traditions build up your family.

1. Traditions build anticipation

They give you something to look forward to.

2. Traditions create memories

My brothers and I still talk about Tom & Jerry’s and cutting down the trees.

If you’re reading this, be sure to listen to the podcast above or click here to hear what my three kids have to say about their favorite family traditions.

3. Traditions bonds people together

People put down their phones and gather around during your tradition moments.

So, what family traditions do you want to create or add to build up your family?

If you’re unsure what to do, start thinking about your childhood to get ideas.

Was there anything you enjoyed?

We added the Tom & Jerry drinks as a tradition from my childhood. This is our third year running. My little brother even asked if we could add them to our Thanksgiving traditions because he doesn’t make it up our way for Christmas.

Was there anything you wished you’d done? Try it out now.

We’re adding bingo this year (with my grandma’s bingo game - the same grandmother that had the Santa mugs) with two dollar bills for the winners. If we love it, we’ll start a new tradition.

And, if you’re thinking, I don’t have family or don’t hang with my family. Keep in mind family doesn’t have to mean blood. You can create traditions with friends too!

Have a Merry Christmas!!

You got this, and Father’s got you!

Thanks a bunch for listening!
