Podcast Episode 131 - They secret to enjoying people more–especially those closest to you

Ever get annoyed with family or friends?

Wonder why people do what they do?

Have you ever thought, “why can’t they be more like me?”

We’re talking about people today and how to enjoy them more even when you don’t know why they do what they do.

So today is for you if:

  • If you want to enjoy people more, especially those you’re around the most.

  • If you’re ready to let go of the criticism or judgment, you’re thinking about others.

  • If you desire to release the stress of all the get-togethers…especially as we’re approaching Christmas.

My seven-year-old daughter Grace played “babysitter” with her nine-year-old sister Aubrey. After some time, Aubrey comes to me and asks me to rescue her. She said she asked her sister, “Can I be done?” But Grace told her, “no.”

I released Aubrey from the grip of her sibling and proceeded to have a talk with Grace. I explained that she loved to be with people 24/7, but her sister liked to be with people sometimes and sometimes needed to be alone.

Grace exclaimed, “Why can’t Aubrey be more like me?!”

Then I told her the crucial lesson….

We’re all different, and that’s okay.

How many of us get frustrated at other people because they’re not like us?

I know I’ve wanted other people to be like me and expected different behavior without even realizing I’d put that expectation on them.

I do a podcast with two friends called Your Fearless Journey with Becky, Kat and Heather. We seriously have a blast hosting our show together! But when we first started hanging out as accountability partners, it wasn’t always easy for me.

Becky and Kat are both Enneagram type 7s. What that means is they’re Enthusiastic Visionaries! They love to have fun and are continually looking for the next great thing. That means they’re always doing something on their way to doing something.

So when we got on our weekly Zoom calls, I would set aside time just to do our calls and focus on that one thing. On the other hand, my friends were always driving somewhere, cleaning something, or working on something, all while on the call.

It used to frustrate me that they wouldn’t set aside time as I did. I thought if they didn’t do our call like me, they didn’t respect me. But I couldn’t have been more wrong.

I didn’t accept that they were different from me, and that’s what caused me stress.

But the good news is that everything changed when I accepted that they’re different, and that’s okay. My stressing over our call stopped, and I enjoyed my friends for who they were.

How about you?

Who do you need to accept that’s different from you and know that’s okay?

When you head to that family or friend shin-dig, remember that, and you let that stress go.

Love them where they’re at.

You can’t change them, so why stress over that?! It’s okay… we’re all different.
